Is the South Beach Diet safe? There are many people who are overweight who would love the idea of a plan like the South Beach Diet. After all, this is a plan that promises flexible eating and even the bold notion of dessert snacks! Before trying any new diet however, it is advisable to contact a doctor and tell him or her of your plans. Why? Because radical diet changes can sometimes cause illness—perhaps even life-threatening conditions.

Doctors Think the South Beach Diet is Safe!

The South Beach Diet has been approved by most doctors as a helpful “low-carb diet.” Though the creator of the diet (a cardiologist from Florida) refers to the plan as a “good fat, good carb” diet, the essentials are similar to a low carb diet. The general belief is that if one eliminates bad carbohydrates in dieting, he or she can also eliminate hunger pangs. Bad carb foods digest quickly and this creates a spike in blood sugar levels. Therefore, the diet stresses healthier foods like vegetables, beans and whole grains. Users of the diet choose their carbs according to the glycemic index. The diet also eliminates bad ingredients like trans-fats and saturated fats. There are three phases to the South Beach Diet: phase 1, the elimination of all sugar, fruits and certain vegetables; phase 2, the vegetable, fruit and whole grain stage; and phase 3, the maintenance phase, which lasts indefinitely.

South Beach Diet Safety Tips

Although the South Beach diet is safe, it doesn’t mean that users are immune to certain health risks. There are pre-existing conditions that can cause complications, particularly in the first phase of dieting. Wait a minute, isn’t a diet that emphasizes the eating of vegetables, fruits and whole-grain healthy? Of course it is! However, the first phase of the South Beach Diet actually eliminates all sugars including sugar found in fruits.

The first two weeks of the program has put some dieters in a state of “ketosis.” This condition occurs due to a lack of carbohydrates, resulting in the production of ketone bodies. If this condition continues, ketoacidosis can occur. Other threats include dehydration, kidney damage and kidney stones. Yes, the South Beach diet is safe, but do not throw caution to the wind!

Safe for Diabetics

Is the South Beach Diet safe for diabetics? The diet was originally created for diabetics and for people in a pre-diabetic state. These individuals have the most notable fluctuations in sugar and insulin metabolism. In theory, the diet decreases these swings in blood sugar, and thus protects the diabetic.

Safe While Breastfeeding

Is the South Beach Diet safe while breastfeeding? Yes, but you should talk to your doctor about dieting during and after your pregnancy. Also, it is strongly recommended that you skip phase 1 and proceed to phase 2 in order to reduce certain risks.
