South Beach Diet Phase 3: A Lifetime of Healthy Nutrition

When you are satisfied you have reached your goal weight, the South Beach diet phase 3 is for maintaining that level for the rest of your life.

In phase 3, you are eating more carbs, however, you have successfully changed the way you eat, what you eat, and how you approach nutrition. The South Beach diet plan was never designed to be a “low fat” or “low carb” diet. Its goal is to teach you to avoid foods with no nutritional value such as refined sugars, bad carbs, and bad fats. As long as you choose the proper foods, you can enjoy a lifetime of good eating without fear of putting excess pounds back on.

Lose unwanted weight while still eating delicious everyday foods!

Controlling Blood Sugar the Rest of Your Life

South Beach Diet Phase 3 What you eat has a profound effect on your blood sugar level. As we grow older, we become more sensitive to carbohydrates.. While carbs are important and should be eaten, too much of them wreck havoc on our bloodstream, causing spikes in our blood sugar level. If our bodies continually experience these sugar blasts throughout our lives, the cells become more resistant to the increasing levels of insulin produced by the liver that must absorb the sugar. As a result, sugar and carb cravings replicate and you feel hungry all the time. In the worst-case scenario, some people feel hunger that is overwhelming and difficult to satiate, even if they just ate an hour ago.

Where You Have Come From

Throughout phases 1 and 2, your body has been adapting to the new diet; your blood chemistry has changed and improved. By the time you reach Phase 3, you will have overcome the carb cravings you left behind in Phase 1, and will expand on the healthy eating you followed in Phase 2. As a bonus, the South Beach diet also requires you to avoid bad trans fats that contribute to heart disease and cholesterol problems.

In the South Beach diet phase 3, carbs are allowed, albeit in moderation. In fact, while this diet is erroneously called a “low carb” diet, about 28 percent of your daily calorie intake should still come from carbohydrates. And if you should put on a few extra pounds in Phase 3 for whatever reason, return to Phase 1 for a period of time until your ideal weight is once again achieved.

Where You Are Going

The third and final South Beach diet phase 3 or maintenance phase is a way of life and a new way of looking at how you eat. In fact, most dieters agree that it is not like a diet at all. Not only will you have trained yourself in making better food choices, cooking delicious meals, getting more exercise, and eating in moderation, your body will respond enthusiastically to the healthy lifestyle. You will naturally feel better and look better, as will head off a number of potential health issues such as heart disease.

By the time you begin the South Beach diet phase 3 you will know what you can and can’t eat, and will have learned the best substitutions for combining good and bad carbs. With a diet rich in protein, healthy fats, fiber, and good carbs, you will have the tools to continue this nutritious and fun way of eating for the rest of your life.
