When you go on the South Beach diet, headaches may occasionally bother you during the initial few weeks on the program, usually called Phase 1. There are several reasons you may get a mild headache from time to time during this first phase of the diet, but none of them are cause for alarm. In fact, in most cases it is easy to alleviate the headache or prevent it without using an over the counter pain medication.
What Causes South Beach Diet Headaches?
Your body is adjusting to a drastically different diet during Phase 1 of the South Beach diet, so it isn’t surprising that you may experience some minor symptoms such as a headache, dizziness or feeling a bit tired. All of these symptoms can be traced back to the change in diet.
Our bodies crave carbs because most of us eat a lot of carbohydrates and fats, which can sharply raise blood sugar levels. When those sugar levels drop two to four hours later, our bodies tell us it’s time to get more carbs into our system. It’s a vicious cycle that has to stop before we can lose weight. Phase 1 of the South Beach diet addresses this by banning carbs for a few weeks. During this time, your cravings should subside as your blood sugar levels stabilize.
Unfortunately, our body also responds to changes in diet by going on alert, sometimes giving us mild headaches or fatigue as a signal that something is amiss. After two or three days with no carbohydrates, your body may try to nudge you back into eating carbs by giving you a headache, but you don’t have to eat unhealthy carbs to get rid of the headache. You can add some healthy carbs to your diet even during Phase 1 by eating meals rich in beans or adding a protein snack to your routine.
Caffeine withdrawal is another frequent cause of headaches. If you’re a caffeine junky and get a headache each day, consider adding a cup or two of coffee or tea back into your diet. While giving up caffeine entirely is a great idea, consuming small amounts won’t sabotage your diet and may keep headaches at bay.
The Importance of Fluids to Combat South Beach Diet Headaches
Simple dehydration may be the culprit if you experience a headache on the South Beach diet. When you cut out all or most of the carbs you usually eat, your body will start flushing out water more quickly. Carbohydrates normally bond to water molecules in your body, aiding in fluid retention. If you suddenly cut back on carbs, your body won’t retain water as easily, leading to mild dehydration. It’s easy to short circuit South Beach Diet headaches by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, while you’re dieting.
